Nominations for new National Parks Opens

On 12 October 2023 the Scottish Government invited individuals, communities and organisations to develop and submit formal nominations for their area to become Scotland’s next National Park saying:
"We committed to the designation of at least one new National Park by 2026, provided that legal conditions can be met. As set out in the Bute House Agreement, any new National Park should be designated in response to local community demand. It should also support progressive development, address the climate emergency in the way we use our land and improve public and community wellbeing."

The official documentation including guidance on the nominations and appraisal process and the nomination form can be found on the gov.scot website here:

It's is now clear that there will be around ten areas in Scotland that might nominate themselves for consideration.

Of particular interest in the information released is the Appraisal Framework and Scoring Guidance.

This is the document that tells us how the decision will be made and the broad criteria are:
• outstanding national importance
• size, character and coherence
• meeting the special needs of the area
• strategic contribution
• visitor management and tourism
• local support
