Could a new National Park include coastal and marine areas?

Coastal and marine areas can be included under the current legislation.  Whether a new National Park incorporates areas of our seas and coasts will depend on which areas are taken forward for detailed consideration as part of the statutory designation process.

National Parks are associated with the very best of a country's natural and cultural heritage, showcasing some of the most valued wildlife and landscapes a country has to offer and providing opportunities for people to enjoy them.  They are also about long-term stewardship of these resources.  A coastal and marine National Park would fulfil these roles, and highlight these aspects of Scotland for which it is renowned.

  1. It would be good to see the coastal and marine areas included as protecting the coast and the abundant marine life we have in Lochaber is of prime importance with the Blue economy being of particular benefit to the coastal communities of Lochaber.
